I explained to them WHY i want it, because with my parents, they dont want to by me a 200 dollar item if it is just going to lay on the desk. I also had to pay for 75 dollars for mine, so perhaps you can offer to pay a little, im not saying 75, but just say that you are willing to pay a little for it.
and also doing a little extra things around the house and good grades always help.

convince that you'll be responsible
convince them that the ipod will be worth their money
get good grades
be responsible
be nice
help them out
tell them why its better than other things such as cheap mp3 players
offer to pay for a little
offer to pay off some of it by doing work

Tell your parents
1. You like music
2. That if you get a CD player you have to carry a ton of CD's around
3. That if your friend has CD's and can get them on YOUR ipod! That saves you money!

tell all the positive things about ipods like how many songs they can hold and offer to pay for some of it if you want one badly

tell them if they dont get you an Ipod that you will start doing drugs and become a prostitute.
that will make them get you one.

My kid told me that iPods were devices that you used to travel to other planets last year...I'll never forgive that little ********.
