There are two options to solve your problem. You already mentioned one of them. I recommend you download K-Lite Codec Pack Full (http://www.codecguide.com/about_kl.htm). You can also try changing media players. Try VLC media player, it plays about every file that is out there (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). Go to (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html) to see the long list of file types VLC can play.

try installing DivX, Xvid, or Theora codecs. These are all very popular, and one of them should work. Make sure you have an MPEG-2 decoder installed also.
