The "Automatic 8 Speed" you speak of is the Number of forward gears that are in the transmission!Just as a bike has 10/12/or even 18 speeds etc.... This tranny has eight speeds which help to give the car better gas mileage by using more gears to give the engine less of a strain!

Italian and rc are correct. I would add that eight speeds, as opposed to 3, 4, or 5 gears allows more performance in the lower gears and better efficiency in higher gears in the same transmission. This theoretically is a wonderful technical advancement. The most efficient point of best mpg per horsepower is the engine torque peak. A transmission with many speeds allows keeping engine rpms at or near this point under many driving conditions until you reach high gear. In the world of transmissions, eights speeds rules.
