Ok, basically I need to know how to find the accents of a word. What's throwing me is: En cy clo pe di a, and words like Kash mir. the book i have says 'Kash mir' has two accented syllables but it seems to me it only has one, at the beginning. Kash (acc) mir (unacc) ????? wow this is hard stuff!

Accenting of words has a lot to do with geography, even different areas of the same country will favor different accents or pronunciations.

I usually put two accented syllables in encyclopedia... on CY and PE (the second having a little more stress than the first. Of course, some people put the "di" and "a" syllables at the end into a single syllable, so it becomes more like en Cy clo PE juh.

I hear both versions of Kashmir, so I don't know what to tell you.

Language also changes over time so that the way things are pronounced or accented now is different from what it used to be.
