Jefferson designed it using as his model an Italian villa designed by Palladio called the Villa Cornaro. Jefferson had seen many Palladian villas while travelling in Italy and had a book designs by Palladio.

Jefferson spent much time in Europe. He was fond of combining elements, drawing, revising, and adding to create the ideal of most anything. Most of the interior of his home was also his design. He spent virtually all his fortune on books and furniture, spending as fast as the money would come in. He admired fine things.
