My mom told me that it's not good to exercise "extremely" on my period, so she doesn't want me to swim. But I'm on the swim team and I wanna still go to meets and practices while I have my period. She says it's not good to go into a cold pool of water, that it could give me health problems. Is this true?
Do any of you girls swim on your period? Any of you on a swim team? How do you deal...?

That's not true, actually it's good to exercise, because it helps with cramps. There is no reason to miss swim practice during your periods. I have been running and swimming for many years during my periods, lol..I'm very healthy! Your mom needs get about 50 years up to speed on the subject! Something funny, When, I was in 5th grade we watched a movie about getting your first period, lol..some of you 40 somethings may have seen it, it's a classic! Anyway, two girls are at public pool fretting over being on the rag! Gees! pop in a tampon and forget about it... The film was pretty old, so maybe tampons weren't on the market, yet.. But, I would think that even in the old days, there was something for women to "wear". Or I guess take a chance that you wouldn't turn the pool into the Red Sea! OK..now I have to research tampons.. Greatest invention ever for women! Rags are the worest, I couldn't stand that bulky diaper feel, plus I hate feeling like I'm leaking out!

I've never heard that before. One of my good friends in high school was one of the state champion swimmers and she didn't miss any swim meets, so I wouldn't worry. Use a tampon. Staying active during your period is also supposed to help with cramps.

I see most people say this is not true. HMMM. Swimming should be fine. (NOT A JOINT STRESSFUL ACTIVITY)
But in all actuality the body releases a hormone during your period referred to as "relaxin" which relaxes the joints and leave a female more open to acquiring an injury during her period. Most sport injuries in females occur during their periods.

People in my grandmother's generation used to believe that. Today we know that there's no reason to slow down your activity when you have your period. There's nothing wrong with going into the water, and you won't get any health problems. If your mother insists, have her talk with your doctor or your school nurse.
