Sounds like you have a driver problem. You may have to uninstall your drivers, or right-click My Computer > Device Manager, and scroll to your Sounds heading. Double-click that, and click on Update Driver. Before that, you can go to pcdrivers.com and search for the right driver for your sound card (you'll have to know the make/model of your sound card). Then, download it to your PC (I usually just d/l it to C:....you can put it where you want). When you update the driver, point it to the one you downloaded. That's all I can think of.....

One other thought, if you have an install CD or other source of existing driver, you might be able just to uninstall it then reinstall it. Sometimes that works, though you might have to physically remove the sound card and restart to totally uninstall it. Then, reinstall the sound card and let windows find it as "New Hardware." It will tell you then what it wants.

just remove the drivers from the device manager, reboot, let windows reload the driver correctly.
