One diagonal section of keys, the 9 - o - l - . row, suddenly doesn't work. The rest of the keyboard is fine, nothing else seems out of order, but I can't operate the puter without those keys working. What's likely to be causing it, and how do I fix please?

It's not under warranty, and I can't afford to spend much. And yes, I am entering this question from a different puter.

You can take the keyboard apart and try to clean the connector where the ribbon cable plugs into the circuit board, but the ribbon is probably bad. One bad wire will take out a bunch of keys. Chances are replacing the keyboard will be the easiest way to fix it. The keyboard comes up pretty easy and you can try reseating the ribbon cable. You have to pull up the top of the connector the ribbon plugs into and release the cable. Then you plug the cable back into the connector and push the top of the connector back down.

If its under warranty my best suggestion is to call for support or a replacement, where is the phone... oh yes, here it is 1-800-624-9896 ... you should give them a call they have phone support, is better than asking here if someone can help you, most likely you will need to replace the keyboard, if under warranty they will do it for you.

every time we hit a key on the keyboard it activates a scanner chip. This chip can not be replaced with out replacing the whole keyboard.
