why does society today worry about the past and future when the present is in terrible trouble. We worry about the mayflower and th meaning of Thanksgiving. If it didnt happen would that stop pollution, stop drinking and driving, stop early pregnancys. I think not. But Does it really matter about the true meaning of thanksgiving. If it does and if it doesnt why?

Because the past already happend and the future holds endless possibilities. The present is depressing to most people.

But I do agree with you. America is worrying about the war (about four years too late when there's nothing we can really DO) and not about things it can actually change like the education system or global warming or ANYTHING.

The whole propoganda about Thanksgiving, Pilgrims, etc. is kinda lame. Giving thanks for your blessings is not. About worrying over the past, there is good reason to worry. There is a famous qoute that goes something like: "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it." That is incredibly relevant. Very little about society and politics is actually new. Since the beginning of time man has been having the same basic conflicts. When we get it right and remember the mistakes our ancestors made before we repeat them the world will be much better.

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate our country and the fact that our ancestors survived and continued to grow and we are blessed for living in this USA.

I don't worry about the Mayflower or history, but I like to learn about it. I agree, the true meaning may not be important, but the reason why is.

Customs and sentimentality, besides lots of people need some excuses to celebrate, and don't ever forget the merchants who would love nothing but to sell their wares. The manufacturers and merchants are the biggest beneficiaries of all holidays.

if we do not remember the past we are doomed to repeat it. so we remember the good times and celebrate them while we remember the bad things and try not to repeat them.
