Explain your situation to your employer and ask them to tell unemployment that you were laid off. The fact that you can't get to the new work site should make a difference.

Remember unemployment is paid by insurance - it is not paid by tax dollars.

Also try hard to find a new job. Unemployment ain't a picnic and only lasts a short time.

The short answer is no.
When you file for unemployment, the employer gets a phone call form the state asking whether you quit on your own or were let go.

Quitting on your own is not the way to get unemployment.

A short FYI on unemployment: it may come back to bite you in the ***. Several government agencies will consider you to be ineligible for their services if you have collected unemployment.

I know I was looking at the the gov prog for first time home buyers and they specifically mention collecting unemployment over the past 2 years as a disqualifier.

If you work at a grocery store, you will be able to get hired at any other place with the same salary. Don't file for unemployment. Don't be one of those. Use your hands and your skills...rise above the abuse citizens cause on our government.

The reason why so many that really need these kinds of services have such difficulty in getting them is because those who are able to work try to ride the system.

Personally, you need to go to the unemployment office in your state and file based on your situation. Recent buyouts and divestures by many (including kodak, royal ahold, delphi and others) .There are programs such as retraining that may be available so do not be afraid to ask. The resources are there for you to make it. It may take a little effort on your part but in the end you make it by YOUR own effort. Go get em!

It is possible you can refuse to work and be eligible for unemployment if you are involved in a managerial dispute over your transportation. It is unlawful to file for unemployment compensation if you are working and you do not report it.
