What are the advantages and disadvantages of using informants in criminal investigations?

The advantage is obviously getting access to info on criminal activity that would otherwise not be available but the downside is the immunity that so often is traded for the info provided by these informants. Sometimes it's too big a price to pay.

An advantage is that they can get info that cops can't since people in their crowds trust them more. Disadvantage is that their credibility can be viewed as unreliable due to their past problems or if they have something to gain with telling the info.
