It could be Braxton-Hicks contractions (false labor) if they are weak contractions. If they are intense, you should probably call your doctor and ask.

I had the same thing at 38 weeks, exactly, except I was only 50% effaced. Even lost the mucous plug!!
Now I'm in week 40 still no baby yet. Just the series of contractions that make me all excited, just to dissapoint.
*sigh*
You may or may not have the baby "soon" - I think it depends on what you consider to be soon. :) (s)he will be out EVENTUALLY! Good luck

If the bleeding isn't heavy wait till your contractions are around 5 min aside and that they stay like that for awhile 40 5 min to an hour. Then get going this sounds like it's time to me. I did the very samething while i became into in exertions with my toddlers the bleeding scared me yet i found out it became into commonplace. stable success hun and congrat's

It could take days, but it sounds like you are in the beginning stages of labor. A friend of mine was dilated to 4 for three weeks and then had to be induced. I would call your doctor or hospital for advice and for what to expect. Good luck.

Are you drinking enough water? One reason for false labor is dehydration. So make sure you are getting a gallon of water a day and hopefully some of the fake labor will stop.
