First of of what kind of virus protection program do you have? I'd say the best are security suites such as Panda Software, Norton and maybe Zonealarm Security Suite.

You'd also need spyware and virus scanners and there are plenty of free quality one on the net.
ex. Spybot Search and Destroy or Webroot Spysweeper

Here's a link for spyware guide

And last of make sure your firewall is enabled and just make sure that you know fully what you're downloading from the internet.

I would sudgest programs like Norton Personal Firewall and Norton Systemworks or System Mechanic Pro by iolo. Easy to use one button checks and repairs on your P.C. for health issues, and better security than he windows firewall. You def. need to get Spyware Protection.

Zone Alarm, Spybot and Ad-Aware are all free, great programs I use in addition to my Norton Anti-Virus. When I get a new computer, I will switch to free anti-virus Avast. Once Norton is on your system, it's nearly impossible to switch.

Happy Thanksgiving.

To protect your PC fully you must do a few things.

Install a:
Firewall (ZoneAlarm)
AntiVirus (AVG)
AntiSpyware (Lavasoft Ad-Aware, SpyBot Search and Destroy with SpywareBlaster)
Make sure your operating system has the latest security updates.

Scan your system for open ports at http://www.grc.com/default.htm
scroll down to "Shields Up".

I like AVG from grisoft.com and Ad-Aware from lavasoft.com. Both are free. Then I pay $46 for CyberDefender which catches 95% of the villains out there.
