Startup Inspector for Windows helps manage your startup applications and provides information on programs that run when you start up Windows. It can tell whether a program is necessary to the system or if it is spyware. The application scans all programs in the Windows startup folder and registry, and provides you with background information. There are more than 4,300 programs in the database. The application's features also include the ability to remove harmful programs such as spyware, viruses, and dialers, as well as remove unnecessary programs like reminders and monitors, thus improving your system's performance and health. Version 2.1 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

Try 2 programs; Security Task Manager from Download.com, and Winpatrol.
Security Task Manager is shareware and on a 30 day trial but will hopefully put your mind at rest. Winpatrol is the cut down version free for home use.
You can use Winpatrol to stop programs loading on Startup. They're still available in your Programs menu.
You can google each of the processess and see what comes up.
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Security Task Manager, search at

There's also a list of free security software on my blog.

You often get clogged up with loads of processes in the start up many of which you dont need. but its hard knowing which ones to delete. I have been told you should not have more than 12. my pc has 14. I try to keep it to that and it runs fine. mine had 50 once and many of those i found out were trackers. the link below will tell you what they are. also run msconfig to stop them starting up each time you boot up.

40 is about normal depending on what you use your computer for. Most of them are system processes and it would be good if u don't stop them. If u feel like you have a virus, run a scan. otherwise, i have 49 processes. some from ims, wifi, bluetooth, etc

40 sounds about normal. if there are redundant ones like explorer.exe, you can shutdown all but one. if there are some with the word "ad" in them usually its good to shut them down, like adlogger, etc. the only way to find out is to shut them down and see what happens. the worst that can happen is you have to restart. also, run adaware or something like it once in a while to kill the popup processes.
also, if you start, run, then type msconfig, you can go to the last tab and dictate what stuff runs at startup, keep the list lean, and everything will run faster.

Well the simplest way is to install Yahoo Toolbar which comes with Free Norton Spyware Scan Just update it and run that it will take care the rest for you.
just use the link in the sourse list.
Make sure at the end of scan remore all the entries found.
If your system is still slow you should have some programs installed which use alot of memory just remove them from your sytem Startup list. which is by clicking Start---->Programs---->Startup. Just right click and remove make sure you know what you are removing.

What you can do is retype the names of any systems you are unsure about into google search. It will bring you to various websites that tell you what the system is used for and which can be safely stopped.
I've done it myself many times.

Way too many. First reboot. Then go to Control Panel, Task Bar and Start Menu and remove each program you do not want to start up every time you turn on your computer. You can access these programs when you need them at Start, All Programs and clicking on program there.
