What country are you in?
Obviously ever country is different.
I'm sure if you explain the problem to your local police department, they could tell you which guns are illegal and which are not and in the case of the illegal ones, how to remedy the situation.
Or you could donate all to your local war museaum!!!

I assume you are asking about laws in USA. Military weapons, if they are machine guns, can be kept IF THEY ARE MADE NON-FIRING. The only exception is if you obtain a Federal Firearms License for the possession of automatic weapons (Expensive and difficult to obtain). Guns that are not machine guns, such as other military weapons, may be kept as long as possession laws are followed. (Some states require Firearms Owner ID, some ban certain types of "assault rifles", some have no restrictions). Best bet: ask an attorney in the jurisdiction the guns will be possessed.

As far as I know, there are no illegal guns.
Even Automatic Machine Guns are legal, if you pay a fee each year to the government.
The Blue States may be different. The people there don't have the freedom the rest of the country does.
Blue States have Oppressive State Governments.

The only way they could be illegal is if they are full automatic. If they are, then you need to contact a licensed Federal Firearm Licensed gunsmith, who can disable that feature and then, your gun will be legal.
That would be the only thing I could think of and the only gun would be the 30 cal carbine. It was pretty easy to make automatic.

Well not in the US, even machine guns could be owned with proper license.
Many historic guns from WWI and WWII are in many collections, I have several myself.

Check with local law enforcement to learn what may be required.
Your friend may have to provide safe keeping for the fire arms until he gets the requisite permits if he is going to keep them.
[Had to do this myself with guns from my grandfather's estate.]
