I think I'd go with Steven Colbert. But the underlying quality that every good comedian has in my opinion is almost an oxymoron, they have over-the-top subtlety. The good comedians say what most of us are thinking, but in an unusual way.

I'm reminded of a joke by Dave Attell I saw last night. It is racist so if you think it will bother you don't read any further.

He said that we should have a religious holiday for everyone. A time when anyone can do whatever they want to do even if it goes against what they believe. He started with Catholics, saying they should be allowed on this day to use condoms and talk about evolution. Then he went to Jews, saying they should be allowed to eat a pork chop and play a professional sport (which is of course fully allowed by their belief, it attacks them as being incapable of athletics, not on belief that athletics is wrong). And finally he ended with Muslims, saying they should get on a plane and allow it to land for once (of course attacking the idea that all Muslims are terrorist, which they aren't but that is why it is funny). Then he ended the whole thing with "No offense" (which is funny precisely because it was meant to offend, and he is emphasizing that by claiming it wasn't meant to). It is this unusual way of saying things that I find so funny.

Stephen Colbert has done a couple himself. He likes to pretend like he has a style similar to Bill O'Reilly (a conservative talk show host). So Colbert often compares himself to Bush as both being good. He said once, "Like George Bush, I rarely read the newspaper..." (the rest is unnecessary for explanation). This of course attacks Bush as saying he doesn't know what is going on in the world, but he masks it as a good thing; thus emphasizing the foolishness of not knowing. It is this subtlety that makes these two and so many others great.

Bill Hicks was my favourite comedian, because he was very intelligent, witty, honest, and very very funny.

I have two favorites - Dane Cook and Kathleen Madigan.
I love their humor because they talk about issues that I can relate too and they laugh at their own humor. Just down to earth people, no gimmicks.
Ck them out!!!
