I don't have health insurance, so I have to be very careful about going to the doctor. I (thought I) sprained my wrist in a twisting maneuver in aikido class and so I wore a brace for a couple of weeks, did the icing/heating thing, and stopped using it. I'm tentatively going back to aikido class and trying to regain my strength and flexibility with that wrist. However, it's fine until someone in class turns it too fast and then it's sore again. It's been almost two months since the injury, and I am starting to wonder if I broke a bone somewhere. It only hurts in class though.Should I go and get x-rays, or simply stay out of aikido for a while?

Yes, go to the doctor and get an x-ray. Sounds like you have a small fracture but you won't know for sure until you get that x-ray. You don't want to keep re-injuring it.

Well Cookie. This is what I'm going through. I have to have surgery on both hands due to osteoarthritis in the severe degenerative stage. The coverings on all the bones in both hands, six in each hand, have worn off and the bones have degenerated, the pain is excruciating at times. The two bones in one arm never developed the cords on the end that hold them together to the bones in the hand. The other is badly worn.

I would be extremely careful if I were you. An injury of this type can and does lead to carpel tunnel, damage to the bones, the tendons and the coverings to the bones. Your hands and wrists are more fragile than you think, take care of them.

You have probably torn a muscle in your wrist. I would stay away from exercise involving your wrist for awhile. The muscle will heal but will take time.

Yes, you could have a small hairline fracture in your wrist as well. Either way, both will just take time to heal.

Avoid your class for a while and if this pain continues, see a doctor. You usually can make payment arrangements. There are several free clinics that can treat you.

Best wishes.

If you still continue to train then just receive techniques on your healthy side until your wrist heals. I would still get it checked out, but would think you could still attend class as long as your sensei and other students know about your injury.
