Lonliness often causes depression and can even lead to suicide. Each person, regardless of sex, will try to compensate in one way or another for their feelings of lonliness and feelings of inadequacy. People who feel lonely often feel that nothing is right in the world and there is no reason to go on living. I certainly have experienced these feelings in my lifetime.

The thing that helped me the most, after I hit bottom, that is, was looking around and seeing someone I could help. It didn't matter if that person was better off than I was. What mattered is that it gave me a sense of usefulness in my life.

If you feel lonely, try going to a nursing home and entertaining them with your talents. Help a neighbor change a tire. Donate some time at a food bank or other charity. Soon, you will find others with common interests and your loneliness will disappear. You might even find that "special someone" who has the same kind of likes and dislikes, as I did.

My opinion is.....

Lonelyness effects everyone in different ways. I cant speak for others, so I'll speak for myself as a single parent.
When my partner left me I became nrery lonely.... for a few weeks this was almost debilitating, certainly masturbation was not something on my mind at any stage. My drinking did not increase, although I did smoke a lot more than usual even though I was nealry given up.
Longer trem effects (after three months alone) I became much more self reliant, less reliant on my former partner. I had a few brief relationships (all flawed in one way or another) but my resolve strentghtned and I became yet more indipendant, and decided to stop smoking, loose weight and in general, make the most of being single, because thats the way I found myself at the time.
Two years later, I still feel lonely, but only at key moments, and yes, sadly christmas is one such moment.... I also felt very much alone yestarday during a traumatic hospital visit, but other times, at work, or at home.... the lonelyness is quite out of my mind.
Since February this year I have found an immense strength in myself, and have acchieved things I was not able to while in my former relationship, I have reformed my lifestyle, thrown away much of my belongigns, passed the driving test, taken a course in better driving, lost weight and gone through a cancer scare all alone and all with no real difficulty.

Why have I done all this ?

Well the bottom line has to be, to make myself more attractive to a possible mate, and therefore to end the lonelyness. the fight against it has many positive side effects, as well as negative ones, it depends on how you take life and where you find strength.
