I'm getting ready to mount street-address numerals on the outside of my house, which has stucco siding. The house is in Santa Clara county in the San Francisco Bay Area of CA and was built in 1986. If I use screws to mount something on an exterior wall, is there anything special I should do to weather-proof it?

Galvanized screws. Maybe a dab of caulk around the hole.

Brick and stucco require some serious maintenance if you want to care for them properly. Vinyl just basically needs to be washed down when it shows the dirt. Brick should be repointed and check for signs of wear on a regular basis. My neighbors home is stucco and it is failing miserably (due to the fact that they assumed it was maintenance free.) Now they have some serious interior repair to do where the water has gotten into their home where the stucco has failed. Plus vinyl has come a LONG way. There are some really nice options now.

Dude, Go down to the hardware store and buy a pack of "cinch anchors" they are real cheap and specially made for stucco. If you try to tighten a screw in your stucco all your going to do is make a bigger hole because the threads will just crumble the stucco. "cinch anchors" have a plastic insert that you put into the hole and it expands when you put a screw in it and you can tighten it up without it pulling out of the stucco.( the screws come with the anchors). No weather proofing necessary with these bad-boys..
good luck.....

get a masonry drill bit & predrill the holes or else the stucco will crack. use galvanized screws as they won't rust & leave orange streaks when it rains
