Animals get shipped to zoos if they are not in that region.
Some zoos actually get sick animals and take responsibillity to help them recover but the animals have to live in cages for the rest of their life. :-( Though sometimes zookeepers suggest particular animals should be put back into their natural habitat. (They also breed endangered species!)
Other zoos get animals to study and display.
Others just trade or buy animals in order to find money. Lots of organizations try to avoid people from visiting the last type of zoo I have mentioned. They protest innocent animals to be held captive and poorly. The first and second and zoos I have mentioned, the animals are kept with love and care plus in a better environment.

For the large, rare or endangered animals zoos
now days mostly get their animals from other zoos
who have bred them. However for many smaller
animals they still get them from dealers in wild
animals, and they have not always been collected
legally. The prices charged for wild animals are
so extremely high in many cases that illegal capture is still a problem. This is especially true
in third world countries where the game laws are not enforced. Read some of the books by
Gerald Durrell, who was an animal collector himself
and started his own zoo on the island of Jersey, to
breed endangered animals for reintroduction to
the wild.

NO, they do not have poachers catch them! Don't be ridiculous...this is not the middle ages!! Animals in zoos are born there or obtain from other zoos...it has been YEARS since any animals were taken out of the wild to be put in zoos! Zoo breed endangered species to PUT BACK INTO THE WILD...this is one of zoos MAIN purpose today besides education! Why on earth would they take animals out of the wild when their main purpose is to replace animals in the wild. Maybe you should visit a zoo so you would understand their purpose.

Many zoos get there animals from other zoos. If one zoo has pregnant animal but doesn't have room for the baby they will ask another zoo to take it. i think its pretty rare to get animals straight from the wild anymore. And this is for AZA accredited zoos, illegal zoos....who knows where they get the animals from

1. Animals are caught in the wild.
2. Animals are bought or traded from other zoos.
3. Animals are born in captivity.
4. Animals are "rescued" from people who shouldn't have them, or smugglers, and brought to the zoo.
5. Animals are donated by people who had them as "pets."
6. Animals are found ill or debilitated in the wild, and brought to the zoo.
Most zoos these days do not pay poachers to catch animals.
