I am planning on getting an ipod nano and i really need to know!

It locks the iPod into it's current functions so you can stick it in your pocket and not worry about the volume accidentally being turned up or down or skipping songs. etc.

Lanyard is simply a cord used to hold something. In the case of an Ipod, it is used hang the iPod around your neck.

the hold button locks the keys so when you touch them the scroll doesnt move sorry i dont think i know what a lanyard is

It prevents the unwanted pressing of buttons.

example, your listening to a song, and it is in your purse or pocket or w/e and the stop button gets pushed accidently...It prevents buttons from being touched... like a keylock on a cell phone.
