Forming ice crystals?

The easiest way is to place a petri dish in the freezer and once cold, place a single drop of the water solution on it. The ice will form immediately. You can store it in the freezer until you need it. A microscope slide can be used this way to get great specimens to look at under a microscope too.

For non-ice crystals, the two simplest compounds to use are table salt (Sodium chloride) and cane sugar (Sucrose). To make crystals with these, dissolve as much salt or sugar in a container of boiling water until no more will dissolve. Upon cooling, crystals will start to form.

Some people will use a weight on a string to hang in the solution to allow the crystals to form rapidly. If you just add a few solid crystals once the solution is cold, you can get good crystals without the string inside.

Less common substances which can be used to made other crystals at home would include Copper sulfate (called blue stone, it is used to treat algae in fish tanks and ponds) and Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom's salt)

put salt in a glass of water then stir it up. Tie a paper clip on the end of a string- then on a pencil to hold the clip just high enuff in the saltwater so it doesn't touch the bottom of the glass, then let it dry out.dries faster if near a heater , but not on one.
