how do i find out where my employer has the 401K going through?

You sould be getting a summary at least yearly on what your 401k is invested in and how it's doing. If it's all a secret then that should raise a flag that something is wrong.

Human Resources can tell you - also, sometimes your statement will let you know which companies mutual fund you're purchasing.
