I used to have two bettas in small one gallon tanks next to each other on my book shelf. I got them almost a year and a half ago now, and about a month ago, one of them died. The other one has always been really active and also quite large. Lately I've noticed that he seems more lethargic and he also seems to have lost weight. Even though he is still swimming around and eats all the food I give him, he's just not quite the same. Could the other fish dying actually have an effect on him?

Bettas are surprisingly personable fish. They do get bored and depressed. They love to watch things-- other fish, their tank decorations, their owners. Visual stimulus is something they need, and if they only have you to watch now, they'll be bored when you leave. Though they'll fight with each other if put in the same tank, bettas fare better (they get more colorful and active) if placed within eyesight of another betta. If getting another betta isn't an option, perhaps consider moving his tank to somewhere that is very active!

Hope he feels better soon!

Yes it is quite possible that he is depressed or even bored. He also may be a little freaked out that a part of his scenery has greatly changed. Get him another companion and hopefully he will go back to being himself. Sorry for your loss.

PS. To the person who said goldfish have a three second memory, that has been disproved otherwise how would they remember to swim to the top of the tank when they see the flap open at feeding time. They know that flap + flap opening up= food. Look it up!!

Get him a proper tank, at least 10 Gallons with heater and filter. Lighting would be great too.
ALL fish need a filter to keep their tank clean and it provides them Oxygen.
Your betta needs more room to move, it will solve the problem. Might be a BIT costly and will require more work but trust me, it will be worth it.

They do get depressed.

rom other's stories, YES fish can get somewhat "depressed". Maybe getting another betta would help.
