A question I'm sure a lot of us wonder about!
It's sick and ridiculous, but all through our lives, we are taught what people "should" look like through television, movies, even our toys when we're kids. As we're growing up, we are taught (and wrongfully so) that skinny is healthy, overweight is unhealthy. And through the years, it turns to skinny is attractive, overweight is unattractive. Why moreso with women than men?
Possibly because it seems that some women can be more skeptical to other women than men are to other men. All it takes is the few ignorant females (emphasis on few, thank goodness...and you all know those girls from high school who I'm talking about) who are so conserned with their own self-image that they form a habit of judging and concemning others, and in the end it seems that the cycle is set into motion and will never end.
As for why men might be prejudice against overweight women, it's arrogance. A belief that skinny is the best and he deserves only the best. Just my opinion.
I feel an urge to add to this that my wife is overweight and she is more beautiful than any woman I've ever seen in my life. I hope someday we, as a society, can move beyond ridiculous physical stigmas.

I think there is. Have you watched a sitcom lately? Overweight, clueless men whose only function is comic relief or losing their temper. Our culture as a whole has departed from a balanced view of men and masculinity. All the strong men, heroic men, men that we admire and look up to, are buff. Come on, name an overweight class-A superstar in Hollywood!

I think it has to do a lot with the social standards and what people believe the ideal form of a women is. And being over weight and being a women kind of goes against the social norm.

Society appears to put more pressure on women to look good than it does on men. It isn't fair or even justified. Women who are slightly to moderately overweight are actually healthier than slightly to moderately overweight men are because of how they usually carry it (hips, thighs and bottom on women verses abdomen and back on men).

oh Absolutely. Very many times I will hear a fat man making fun of a fat woman behind her back and he is seemingly unaware of how hypocritical he looks.
Its the culture I guess. Women are all supposed to look like super models while the men can get as fat as we want.

when women are over weight they will go to Oprah. Men do not have a icon that they can go to other than Richard Simmons

Look at how society views women in magazines! They all are thin. You instill that to readers - especially young girls during their formative years-- and they will grow up thinking you have to look pencil thin to look hott.
This is terrible!
