Plane crash, just like LOST

You should read the book - it's brill!
It's a plane crash - they are being taken away so that they survive the disaster (probably nuclear) which is killing so many people where they have come from... that is why it is a plane full of children.
But I really would recommend reading it - it is awesome, brutal!

They were a plane for some kind of school function, I believe, and somehow only the children survived.

There was a plane crash, but it was never described how the plane crashed. It is presumed that the plane was shot down.
