the simplest way is to look. seriously open the pc and take a look. if you cannot find any markings on the card or if it is built into the motherboard then use the motherboard markings example (Abit-AN7 ect) and look the specs up on the net. this has the added advantage of giving you other inbuilt devices such as video and or lan usb's etc. If however the former is true and your card is "an add in card" or (daughter board) then simply unscrew the securing screw (with the machine off of course) and examine the board for markings, if no markings can be found then simply put in the chip numbers you can find. this should result in giving you the name of the card you have in your machine. As suggested one of the most common sound devices is indeed the ac97 but there are many more. it can be disasterous to assume so find out.
Once you have the information on your motherboard and it has given you the sound device name, you may find drivers for the device on the manufacturers web site or what are called (3rd party device drivers) from download .com. Example :- in your browser type the following -motherboard specification abit AN7 ,,,, your browser will then take you to the abit site and you can see the specs and act on information recieved. it may help to make a printout of the specs page and place it into an envelope taped to the inside of your machine.
