The National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (help·info), or NSDAP), generally known in English as the Nazi Party, was a political party in Germany between 1920 and 1945. The party's leader, Adolf Hitler, was appointed chancellor of Germany by president Hindenburg in 1933. After Hindenburg's death Hitler rapidly established an autocratic regime known as the Third Reich, under which the party gained almost unlimited power.

Despite the use of the term "socialist" in the Nazi Party's official name, it is not generally considered a socialist party in the common understanding of the term, in the sense that Nazism rejected the policies of internationalism, egalitarianism, and common ownership of the means of production, as well as the concept of class struggle, which are some of the primary tenets of socialism

Despite that, the Socialist movement will always be incorrectly associated with Nazis and fascism. Hitler used the word "Socialist" to fool the people into believing the party was "for the people".

Follow up: Anything, including Democracy can lead to fascism!

The Nazis were NOT socialists!

Socialism has nothing to do with mass genocide!

Socialism is to do with a fair deal for the working man. And not allowing rich people (many of whom are only rich because they were lucky or they popped out of a rich man's wife's vagina) to liberally crap all over those beneath them. It is to do with giving everyone a fair chance in life and supporting those who fall on hard times through no fault of their own.

Fascism is the complete opposite - all greed and selfishness and survival of the fittest. How can one lead to another, its impossible!!

The problem is that Hitler (a mad fascist) called his party the National Socialist Party and so now opponents of Socialism (mainly Yanks) will jump on this as an example of why "Socialism" is "bad" - even though a) Hitler was NOT a Socialist and b) They don't know what Socialism even is.

I would suggest these people educate themselves but given that most of them consider watching crap Hollywood films to be the best education on world affairs its pointless.

The word Nazi in the German language stands for National Socialist. But what the practiced was Fascism.
It could lead to facism.
But Capitalism can lead to Dictatorship.
Which is what Nazi Germany had 70 years ago or so.
The implementaion is what is important.

Thet are self-proclaimed socialists. The term Nazi is an abbreviation of a political party in WW2 by the name of the "National Socialist German Workers Party".

The Nazi party platform consisted of the worst aspects of both fascists and socialists.

Such as their persecution of the Jews was more fascist and gun control and welfare programs were more socialist.

Fascist.

They were fascists, but they were also 'futurists'. In a way they believed fascism was the future. Socialism didn't start modern fascism, but rather philosophers like Hegel, whose works influenced the brutal european leaders.
