hankey codes were used in the early 70's to meet other gay men in places of public so it could be discreet & you would know exactly what the other is looking for. This is a fact, and very true. Hankey codes aren't really used anymore unless in a place where public sex is encouraged ( like a leather bar with a dark room or an adult bookstore or a bath house). The gay leather community still have people using hanky codes but most are using it for fisting. ( because even in the gay community it's taboo) Not many people in the gay community no about hankey codes either because the practice is so old. Tristan has the right link for hankey codes.

I've never known anyone who used the hanky code. Never. To say that "gay people use colours to identify different sexual activities" is not an accurate statement in my opinion. Maybe it's an urban legend.

What would be the appropriate occasion to wear one of these hankies? And why would you want anyone to know?

I'm sure there USED to be a tried and true color system, but now those signals are not necessarily needed. Pink is simply a color. It is a choice, not a sign. Pink is normally a "girl" color so it is "gay" to wear it as a man. PROFESSIONAL men wear pink ties because it matches the suit, not because they want to announce that they are gay to the board members. The links provided by other answers are probably good, but just remember: times are a changin'. To the homophobes out there: GROW UP

That Code is quite outdated simply because the times have changed. People just aren't hiding their sexuality as they used to do.
