It is a nice island but not outside of Amsterdam. It is a few hours by car or train (to Den Helder where the boat goes) up north. Do rent bike and go in the summer. Bring your swimsuit.
Personally I like the islands Terschelling and Ameland. They are more rural. It will take you some more driving time (to Harlingen).

Texel is the biggest island in the Netherlands. It's a beautiful island. Because it's a rather big island you don't always realize that it's a Island. There's a ferry leaving from Den Helder towards the island. Lots of things to do on the island. They also have a center were they take in Seals. You can visit it, it's called Ecomare.
Look on the tourist info site for more info, also in English.

Yes, it is a lovely destination when living/visiting Holland. We went there last year for a long weekend, with our car, and had a fantastic time. You can go by ferry as a walk-on passenger, or by car, staying for a full day or longer. There are good places to eat, and lots of sheep to take pictures of. A very restful time, to be sure, and a great way to escape the usual tourist spots.
