I have been getting Physical Therapy for a torn rotator cuff, and recently they have been putting a transdermal patch of cortisone on me. The second I received I broke out ina rash and wash extremely itchy after I removed the patch. I just took the third one off, and I have been sneezing. A quick shower releived the itchys. I have been told that a shot will help tremendously, I am jus worried I may get sneezy all the time. Has anyone ever had this before?
I need advice on what to expect, and what are the dangers.

While itching and burning can be signs of allergic reaction to cortisone, sneezing is not necessarily a symptom since the the delivery method is transdermal and does not pass through the respiratory system. I'm not saying it CAN'T happen, but that it's not likely. Also, the response above is right...it's rare to be allergic to sterois...in fact, they are often used to treat allegic reactions.

Regarding the transdermal patch...are you using an iontophoresis patch such as the EMPI patch? In that case, the method is not really transdermal, it uses an electric charge to drive the ion into the body which is powered by a battery. After the treatment is delievered, the patch is thrown away. (Also, the drug is probably not cortisone, but probably dexamethasone.) Direct current is known to burn when applied and leave a red, itchy mark that may last a few hours, but should then subside. This is not the sign of an allergy, just irritation due to the electric current. If this does NOT describe your reaction or your patch, then yes, you might be allergic to the medication and you should tell your therapist right away and the treatment should be discontinued.

The reason the cortisone wouldn't help an insect bite is because it requires an histamine. There is nothing in cortisone to cause an allergic reaction. Not so for antibiotics, and spices. Please listen to your vet, and do what he suggests. Otherwise you are throwing your money away if you don't intend to listen to his advice, and trust me, they have spent a lot of years in school, all with the intent of helping your pet when they need to be helped. Good luck.

It's extremely rare to be allertic to steroids, however it's not impossible. It is more likely to be allertic to the adhesive/glue in the patch or latex that might be used in the patch itself. Tell your doctor about your reaction to the patch. There is a way to test what you're allergic to.
