He realized in the end that the man he killed with the gun actually saved his life in an astral projection that led back in time to several days before the day he was supposed to die, which was the night of halloween. The man who visited him was in the bunny outfit because that what he was wearing at the time of his future death. Donnie was susceptible to spiritual waves which were directed at him for the sole purpose of knowing what your next immediate destination would be, which were discovered also by another lady, and she had written a book about it. In this case, the gun that was used to kill the bunny dude (i don't remember the name) was his nnext immediate destination. His teacher couldn't understand the aspect of astral projection of the soul and therefore dismissed it as a false belief by Donnie. Deja Vu, time travel, astral projection, and time slips are involved in this film. It's really a good movie, i agree.

Fullfilling one's destiny in the time alotted without mucking things up searching for portals. Your portals are already waiting for you, and time will lead you to them when it's the right time.
That's what I take away from it, mainly because of how happy Donnie was as he lay down in his bed for what he knew would be the very last time. That everyone woke from their own glimpse of their own time, was joyous even for Kitty Farmer who was clearly miserable because misery is her joy. What a big, frikkin wow.
Man, I love that movie.

Donnie Darko's themes include love, sacrifice, existentialism and time travel. The movie presents paradoxes never fully explained and a cryptic storyline open to multiple interpretations.

time travel. Frank is a ghost from the future who leads him to the death of the girl he loves the first time round so he goes back in time and rather than going with Frank he decides to die to save her life. I would elaborate but I've gotta go now.
great film anyway, one of my all time faves.

He did get killed in the crash with the jet engine, and the film is about what would have happened if he hadn't been.
He's seeing his own alternative life (hence the weird tube thing, and the rabbit as the grim reaper), sort of.
Or maybe not.
It's something to do with time.

its about an 80s generation teenager who thinks the world revolves around him
to teenagers it suggests that we are all linked and that 'you' can be a superhero just in your everyday actions and by getting up in the morning and going about your daily business
the same kind of message that joss whedon put into 'buffy the vampire slayer' that he thinks normal teenagers are heroes just going to school and dealing with the issues that they do in order to encourage a kind of 'community spirit' within youngsters without them knowing or realising
it is sorta true in that sense as well i spose ;o) lol

I think it's a film that is open to interpretation by the watcher. So whatever you think it's about, then that's what it's about!
