I have a Kenmore that goes fills up but no longer "agitates". Also if I turn the dial to the rinse cycle it doesn't drain or spin. The only thing it seems to do is fill with water when I put it on the wash cycle. Any DIY advise before I break down and buy a new one I can't afford!

Take the back off and see if the drive belt seems to be intact. Check whether the motor is turning but the belt is either missing or stuck in the same position. Is the motor turning? Belts are tricky to reach but simple to replace when you look at the parts manual which shows where they fit. Motors are more expensive but still easy to replace (unless they are placed in weird location inside the machine).

Some of the newer ones also have a safety interlock not just on spin but also on agitate. See if that seems to be in position and clicking when you lower the lid. Those are also simple to replace.

It could also be the control timer that tells the motor when to turn and the transmission when to leave neutral and start the agitator. Those two kinds of failures suggest you need a new washer.

I'm guessing your dial is bad ( the part that has the timer ). Go to Home Depot or Lowes and ask the app. guys.

Sounds like the motor is shot. If it is under warrenty call Sears, otherwise, it may be time to scrap it for a new one.....

close the lid and quit watching it. most won't function with the lid up.
