You are wrong. Society gives a lot of respect to teachers. What they don't give is a living (aka salary), as money is more expensive than respect.

Historically, 150 yrs ago, teachers were 8th grade graduates in one room school houses- women only as there wasn't much belief that women could do anything more than be a teacher or nurse. In many ways we haven't gotten past that. Another reason is that too much of what (Americans) have came "easy" People come to this country w/o an education and work themselves up. That's the lure of US but also a curse. Many cultures from WWI and II told their children to work hard and study but by the next generation got wrapped up in materialism and forgot about education....
I have heard many parents say, "I didn't finish H.S., but I'm doing alright!" and often they are! So how do you teach their children that they need to further their education?
There's another element of society where kids see pimps, theft, drugs bringing in way more than entry level jobs. Its a way of life for their neighborhood, so why would working at minimum wage appeal to them?
And some people just don't value "smarts" There's a feeling that everyone should have the same benefits of free public education, and no on should be any smarter than anyone else. Smart children are teased and ridiculed and called nerds. It is difficult to educate real smart kids, because you are always fighting a system that wants equality for all. Schools don't want to advance them or provide classes for them, so a lot of them "turn off" and slide by.

Well I know for sure in my area the teachers do not help the children if they do not under the assignment given to them. When they ask the teacher for help in the classroom, the teacher tells them they should have paid attention. They do not take control of there class rooms these days, it seems like they are more into just getting the classes done and over with here in my area. This is why I feel that teachers are not getting the respect.

Nobody gets the respect they deserve. Our society is losing track of what respect is. Some kind of negative reinforcement process is embedded in our culture that reduces the ability to give, receive, or understand respect. It is a cultural illness that will do us in.

society has never valued a job held originally and primary by a woman. society also values people who are paid a lot. I just wonder if all teachers were paid $100,000 a year, and the jobs became real competitive, then we would be repsected.

Because we have a group of parents who try to force their children into the "box" they have for the child's future, namely college and beyond. Thus, if the child want something different or is incapable of attaining the parent's goals, the teachers are blamed, not the genes.

it might be a case of point of view, some view teaching as a 9-5 job, some see it as their passion, so it all depends.

Capitalism depends on a stupid and uninformed population. Teachers are the enemies of all America (and others) holds dear, whatever claims they make aside. Why do you think Civics and the arts are always the first things to go?
