Art value is subjective but human lives and suffering isn't. It harms no one to sell that painting or other 'treasuers' for big money. Yes it's great art but it's also just oil on canvas. Why not sell it.

Its not like they're spending millions to preserve it there. I'd just say that the Louvre museum authorities are keeping monalisa and other 'treasures' as you put it to attract tourists. But it would be a great shame if monalisa is kept in someone's possession.
There are many other ways to save human lives you know, like the money spent for luxury by some people.

My guess would be that such a universally recognized art Icon should not pass into the private sector where it's access to the masses could be limited, yet you do raise a very interesting question... what public assets might be passed into private sponsership with conditions that they remain in the public realm, in order to fund programs for the public good?????.. I like the way you are thinking

if they sold it to an individual buy, then we would never see it again! Da Vinci's works should be shared with the world not put in someones livingroom!

i would sell it even if it'll give me 5$ i wouldn't care about some old ugly italian DRAWING
