When you're pregnant, you shouldn't have more than 800 mcg of folic acid daily. As long as what you're taking is that amount, you should be okay. Folic acid is said to prevent spina bifida, as well as a host of other birth defects caused in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Also, remember that green, leafy vegetables carry folate, too, so you may not even need to take THAT much if you're eating well.

I hope that this helps.

If the doctor wants you to then yes. Some prenatal vitamins contains lower amounts of certain things. Your pre-natal vitamins may contain a lower amount of folic acid then he wants you to take. Make sure you take the amount he prescribes and not any more than that.

Yes, if the doctor prescribed it then I would not worry. I also take prenatals and folic acid. When I take both, I have more energy throughout the day.

You should've been on Folic Acid tablets before your conceived? and still should be...ask your Doctor that question and if he disagrees call your Midwife unit and ask 'cos I thought that was an absolute essential thing you needed to take. I took Pregnacare (brand name tablets) which has all the vitamins in that you should have in your system (I had problems with sickness so this made sure me and the baby were getting everything we should be), if you decide to take the Pregnacare I am sure these have folic acid in them so you don't have to take this separately.

Good luck.

yes there is no harm in folic acid/folate( in the b vitamin family); in fact Americans get so little in our daily diets that they add it to bread to help the general population get more than we are getting; there are fewer babies born with neuro defects; there is a long long long list of benefits ; don't worry about this one; most people should be taking this as a supplement as well; reduces colon cancer risk; stroke, feel confident that your ob is doing exactly what you should prenatal vitamins and folic acid are the dynamic duo super heros; you are fine; congratulations

yes, you can take both. sometimes the prenatal vitamins do not have enough folic acid in them. i take prenatal vitamins, folic acid, and calcium supplements.

You should get atleast 400mcg of folic acid and you can take up to 800mcg, especially if neural tube defects run in your family.

if he wants you to, yes. typically prenatals already have all your folic acid.

An extrea dose of folic is fine, its to prevent birht defects, and spina bifida (spelling?). but if your OB told oyu to then hes the best one to know. but if you have serious concerns about this talk to him. hes the best one to answer any and all of your questions. good luck.
