I stubbed my big toe yesterday, and the nail is like a flap. I flushed it out real well for 10 minutes while i waited for the bleeding to stop. then I fit the nail over the bed like before, cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, put a bunch of antibiotic ointment on it and bandaged it. Do i need to carefully remove the nail that was like a flap? Do I just keep adding the ointment to the nail and its surroundings and keep it covered until the new nail grows back? what do I do and for how long? Any ideas?
I really dont want to have to go to a Dr. unless I really have to, So any help would b great. Thanks.

If it is not painful for you to remove the nail then remove it.
Continue to keep it clean, nix the alcohol.
If you've got a Betadine/Povidone Iodine solution it would be much better at fighting bacteria and fungus to the area. Clean it with a few drops of water and the iodine solution, let it dry, then apply the ointment.
In a couple of days you should leave off the bandage so the area will not stay moist, but open to air so it can dry. The moisture can hold in infection and slow down the healing.

Remove the portion that's flapping (try not to cut yourself or hurt hourself too much). If you can't do it without hurting yourself, leave the nail on and keep it covered with a bandaid to prevent it from being ripped of by the socks. Wait a couple of days until the area is not so sore and then try to remove the nail. You do not need to put antibiotic ointment on it if it's not infected or there are no open wounds. It will only macerate skin and could potentially irritate it. If you have futher questions, email me.

I see some good ideas here, most involving carefully removing the nail, or part of it. "mythought" said it pretty good, but I'd use hydrogen peroxide and neosporin ointment, rather than iodone (ouch). Keep it clean, dry and NOT covered tightly. If you leave the old nail on, you're setting yourself up for infection, and it's gonna come off anyway. Seeing a doctor now might not be necessary, but don't hesitate if you start having bad pain or signs of infection

your nail is actually white. Its numb because you ripped it from your actual toe. Don't mess with it. If you think its getting really really swollen, or infected (oozing junk) then go to the doctor. Its going to be sore for a while. The doctor can't do much for it unless its infected, which they will give you an antibiotic for the infection but not the pain. Its probably just bruised.

Owch!!Remove the old nail, or at least as much of it as you can. Keep it clean & dry and antibiotic ointment on it fro a few days to prevent infection.Watch for redness, swelling, draining etc. Good luck

if you can sucess fully get the entire toe nail off, keep the area clean and covered.
Either way, a new nail will start to grow back soon.
