I know we eat food to give us energy but how do humans, or any
other mammals, actually produce heat for the necessary body
temperature

Heat is generated through inefficient energy reactions in our body.

As you may remember from physics class, no reaction is 100% efficient - for example: In a light bulb, not all of the electrical energy in converted into light; some is converted into heat.

The same is true of our cells, and a some of our energy is released as heat (instead of what is intended!) Muscle movement is especially inefficient, with a great deal of the energy used for muscle cell contraction given off as heat. This is why you get hot when you do exercise!!

Through cellar resperation. The chemical energy is absorbed and used to fuel reactions in cells thorughout the body. As you know no system on earth is 100 percent energy effiecient, and that inculdes mammals. The energy is converted to heat that brings temprature to optimum temprature for reactions

The electric field around an atom molecule crystal etc. is disrupted by the electric field change associated with a photon. In the case of a water molecule, infrared photons stress the hydrogen to oxygen bond length. This creates an oscillation within the molecule whereby the molecule expands and contracts rapidly. This increases the probability it will expand and contract enough to interfere with an adjacent vibrating molecule and the entire bulk of molecules start randomly jittering around. 00 Comments (0)

Mammals, (and birds too) produce heat internally by the extremely rapid vibrations of muscles under the control of the autonomic nervous system.

the energy or heat production can be studied at cell level.the food goes to the cells and there it
is utilised.in cells the mitochopndria are source of heat. therefore these are called "POPWER HOUSE" of cells. so heat is produced at cell level by mitochondria.
