If you like museums, most of them are free. Museum of London in Barbican, or British Museum in Holborn are both good. Art galleries like Tate Modern and Tate Britian are cool and also the National Gallery. At the Tate Modern they have free slides in the entrance area which are very fast and enjoyable - try the one that goes from the 5th floor!
Covent Garden is good to look round, especially near Christmas. Go early evening and have a browse round the stalls
If you fancy seeing a show, then lastminute.com have some good theatre deals, so you can save a bit of money.
Camden town is definitely worth a look round, or Portobello Road market at Notting Hill.
Another cheap alternative is just a nice long walk along the south bank of the Thames. Get off at Embankment, cross over the river and then walk all the way down to London Bridge.
Regents Park is lovely, and StJames park has good views of Buckingham Palace.
How about ice skating outside the Natural History Musum? I think they had to close the rink becuase of the mild weather, but it'll probably be open when you go there.
Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Sqaure are obviously very lively at night although the bars get crowded and the drinks are very pricey!
Have fun

I think the British Museum is free and seriously big. There's a lot to see there. I just walked around London and used a daypass for the bus. Decide what you absolutely want to do and decide what you want for your budget for the entire day. Can you economize on food and lodging and pay more for activities?
