Because people get used to routine and familiarity, so when something happens to disrupt that, many times, the person isn't prepared to deal with it.

Fear of the unknown stems from our attitude about it, which is just ego entrenchment. It is the nature of the ego to seek sameness; permanence, when in reality nothing stays the same for too long.
Unknown is scary and unpredictable. In moments of ego-lessness the fear subsides, and for a while at least, the unknowns in life and death(long story) are seen as a great adventure. The fear dissipates, and the quality of wonder and the spirit of unbounded growth take over. I've felt this sometimes but.....mostly for me, it's the good old fear of the unknown that rules the day! lol.
We are so comfortable with the known. Even if the known is pure hell and misery most people prefer it over the new. In the known we know how to act, what is expected. In the unknown we have to face the fact that we may not know how to act. We face our fears and doubts.
This fear can be healthy and normal due to dangers lurking around in certain circumstances. If common sense and a spirit of adventure could be combined it would be pretty cool, and it would go a long way towards getting over this fear of the unknown. :)))

Sweetie: Life and the unknown are feared in "my opinion" because fear is an acronym for:
"F"=False
"E"=Evidence
"A"=Appearing
"R"=Real
There is nothing to be afraid of. Even when you know nothing about it. As a matter of fact, that is when you should be your bravest.

It isn't known, and therefore has no predictability. Being able to predict (or make very good guesses about) the near future seems to make me feel safe. If a situation starts to lose it's predictabillity (so as I will have a hard time responding in an adaptive manner), the unpleasantness will make me want to get out. I think this is fear.

because people don't know what to expect- people are a product of years of building up of the world, and most people are content knowing (or at least thinking) what is out there and they know what to expect
Centuries ago, people were not afraid of what they did not know, otherwise, we would all still be stuck in Europe because people would have been too afraid to see what's out there.
People need to lighten up and live- I think that that is how you get rid of the fear of the unknown

Because it is not safe.
Depending on cases, the unknown can/should be threatening.

If one has unity with God in unconditional love within the heart they become Fearless. I would say "absense of God is the root of fear". or fear of the unknown.
