Jupiter--Ganymede is the largest satellite in the solar system.

The planet with the largest moon is Jupiter and the moon is Ganymede. Although it is only a moon, at 5262km it is larger than the planet Mercury which has a diameter of 4879km. Ganymede is the only other moon apart from ours that can be seen with the naked eye.

Before the Galileo probe studied this moon in detail it was thought that Ganymede and Callisto which is the last of the 4 largest moons of Jupiter were mainly composed of a rocky core surrounded by a large mantle of water or water ice with an ice surface (and that Titan the largest monn of Saturn and Triton the largest of Netune were similar). Data sent back from the Galileo probe hinted that Callisto has a uniform composition while Ganymede is differentiated into a three layer structure: a small molten iron or iron/sulfur core surrounded by a rocky silicate mantle with a icy shell on top.

Jupiter's largest moon Ganymede has a diameter of 5265km, making it the largest moon in our solar system.

Saturn's largest moon Titan has a diameter of 5150km.

Both Ganymede and Titan are significantly larger than the reclassified dwarf planet Pluto which has a diameter of only 2390km. They are only slightly larger than the planet Mercury, with a diameter of 4879km.

Ganymede is Jupiter's largest moon, and the largest moon in the entire solar system; it is larger in diameter than Mercury but only about half its mass. Ganymede is the only planetary satellite (besides the Moon) that can be seen by the naked eye — but only with very good eyesight during ideal conditions. It
