The best way to discourage any pest is to eliminate the environment that it likes. With snakes one should keep debris (wood piles, old tires, etc)that could provide cozy places for the snake. Trim shrubs and plants up from the ground to eliminate cover. Make sure homes are sealed well around foundations and screens are tight. There is a snake proof fence manufactured but it can get costly for large areas.

I envy you for living in the country, that has been my lifelong dream, but unfortunately my husband is not the outdoors type of a guy. You do not mention in what state you are from, but to me any snake is frightening when I see one, My guess would be that any kind of moth balls should do the trick in keeping snakes away from your property. If you are thinking of raising chickens, there is no way that you will ever be able to keep those snakes away because most of the snakes eat eggs and small chicks. Good Luck.

We have a full time cabin and also have a cat and dog. BEST way to keep snakes away...!
Have heard of the mothballs too, but most ole'timers say no.
I am so scared of them....have not seen one!
Actually they are more scared of you than you them...lol..just watch your footing and wear a good boot they cannot pierce w/teeth, and carry a big stick to warn them you are coming. They usually strike because they are startled.
Clear your property of brush/trash, things where they can hide. Make yourself a yard..
Always just be alert that they ARE there but don't ruin your lifestyle because of them.

Sprinkle sulfer powder around your house and yard. It's in expensive and nothing works better. It's available at any hardware store or lawn and garden center. Rattlesnake brand is by far the most popular but any will work. Good luck and Peace.

The best way is to use moth balls... Moth balls contain tetrahydraline, and snake hate that stuff...
