~well it all started with the livestrong wich represented living a healthy lifestyle and now there are many other bands and imitations
The Livestrong wristband is a yellow awareness bracelet developed by world reknowned cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong, and Nike in the summer of 2004. The band is part of the "Wear Yellow Live Strong" educational program. The program is intended to raise money for cancer research, raise cancer awareness, and encourage people to live life to the fullest. The band sells in packs of 10, 100, and 1,200 as part of an effort to raise $5 million for the Lance Armstrong Foundation in cooperation with Nike who manufacture and sell the wristbands through their Nike outlets worldwide. This target was achieved within 6 months, and there have now been 70 million Livestrong bands sold till date. [1] Individual bands sell for US$1 each.
The Livestrong Wristbands have inspired numerous other wristbands for charities and various political causes, including wristbands for breast cancer (pink), diabetes (various colors), epilepsy (half blue, half red), Hurricane Katrina (ocean blue mixed with white) and wounded veterans[2] (camouflage).

The original ones were for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, but now there are some that represent all kinds of different causes. Overtime, they have become more of a fashion accessory that enables people to create their own custom sayings.

The rubber bands that you are asking about are bracelets with inspirational messages. The first one that I know about is a yellow one that Lance Armstrong had out that was to support cancer awareness. It said "Live Strong".
I believe they have them for just about anything now, Happiness, Patience, etc...
