The price on it is 1/3 off so that price is 2/3 of the original price.
If you say the original price = p then the 8 dollars = 2/3 x p
so the equation is 2/3 x p = 8
Now clear that 2/3 by dividing both sides by 2/3
That gives you p = (8 divided by 2/3)
(8 divided by 2/3) = 8 * 3/2 which = 12 = p
So the original price was $12 and Sonia saved $4 and paid $8

If it is 1/3 off, then the cost of the cd is 2/3 of its original price
Call x the original price of the cd. Thus (2/3)x equals the price she paid, which is $8. Solve for x. 8/(2/3)=12. So she saves $4 because it was originally 12.

the price is x, the discount is then x1/3=x/3 so then the price minus the discount is 8$
x-x/3=8; 3x/3- x/3=8 ; 2x/3=8 that makes x=12
she saved x/3=12/3=4 $

I read the question a little differently than the first 2 who posted.
I read it that it was marked $8 and she gets an additional 1/3 off.
But I am unsure what level math you are in.
8(1/3) =2.67 amount saved
total price paid =5.33
