There is no way that you would know this unless you had been taught about thermal decomposition. So all you need to worry about is the correct formula of oxygen gas.

Therefore 2HgO --> 2Hg + O2.

all matter that is not provided with enough oxygen becomes decomposed, for instance, if you take a piece of vegetable and put it in a pit it is not exposed to the natural atmosphere hence it starts decomposing.
