The English are good at inventing things, true, but not very good at developing those inventions and making them a commercial success.

Take railways. The English invented them, but the best railways are to be found in mainland Europe (T.G.V., 186 mph). The English invented the tilting train (the APT), but the project was cancelled on cost.

The English invented the first commercial jet aircraft (the Comet), but it kept crashing, so America took the initiative.

In this respect, other countries have learned a lot from England. The only thing is, they then beat us at our own game.

Well, you know Al Gore invented the internet you're using here. Let's see, I think it was the Chinese who popularized drinking the tea you folks are so fond of. Bill Gates (the American version) invented how most of us use our computers. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. Oliver Winchester invented the repeating rifle. Henry Ford invented the mass production of automobiles. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Benjamin Franklin invented suicide by electrocution. When I think about it, I can't think of one dang thing you English have contributed to the world.

A lot of the axiomatic basis of mathematics and philosophy, and thus for the physical sciences, originates from the Greeks and their predecessors. Without them, very little modern invention would ever see the light of day.

And, well, those crazy Japanese are the masters of modern day technical innovation.
