A seperation usually occurs when the marriage is in trouble and the couple doesn't want a full divorce or can't afford one. Sometimes a couple will seperate in order to work on there marraige from a distance. Sometimes people just file for a seperation because it's easier than getting a full blown divorce. And the couple usually then live in seperate homes in any event of a seperation. that is the whole purpose of filing for a seperation however, it is not the same thing as a divorce

Then there's legal separation. The laws for this vary depending on where you live.
