it means: at the place that is the furthest from the entrance. for example, if it was dark at the far end of a cave, that would mean that it was dark at the back of the cave.

Since the subject has only entered the space and obviously has come in from the outside - the light that is entering the area he has just come into is not as bright as where he has come from. Therefore, AT THE FAR END has to mean "the furtherest place from where the subject is at present".
