Well uh both of the previous answers are waaaaay off. A "Sliding /Compound Miter Box" will make a straight pass of about 12", and at a 45degree angle of about 8"wide piece of stock. You see the the first clue they missed is the sliding part.

Depending on the guides, a 10" non-slide mitre saw will just cut 6" A sliding mitre-saw will cut 6" plus the distance it slides-out.

"Uncle Bob" should read the Question a little slower.... "Mitre Box?" That's not what he asked about?

Hmm... No offense to answer 1 but I too have more than one Chop/Miter saw and I calculate the CUT area at near 8 inches with a 10 inch blade. I just flip the "stock" to finish any straight cuts.

If you happen to have one that swivels, to allow "Ripping" KEEP it and in good condition.

The cut will be about 4 inches. Maybe a little more, but not much.
