The term "rainmaker" originates from early agrarian cultures (like the Native Americans of the mid-western plains) that were used to describe those that could summon the rain during times of drought and bring life and prosperity with the resulting abundance of food. More rain meant more plants (like wild fields of wheat) and more plants meant more animals (like rabbits, deer, buffalo, etc.) which in turn meant the tribe would have more food and materials for tools, clothing and shelters rendered from the animals.
The modern usage is applied describe someone that is successful in their field and whose skills are able to bring in an abundance of money (rain) that allows the entire company (tribe) to survive and prosper. Usually if someone is labeled a "rainmaker" it means they bring the most money into a group that can't survive without them.

ieee!!! in these sad times there are ppl called fake indians ....these are the only ppl who Claim to make it rain and they CLAIM to be medicine men or women....bunch of hooooweee....rainmaker is one who prays for rain and besides its a ceremony....real rainmakers (they know who they are) can do so.....the raindance does no rain bring...right away anyway...so dont ever ask just any real indian to do the raindance THAT my innocent readers is an insult.....take care..

It means they think they can make things happen. More often then not they can't. In the dictionary it is a person or event that makes rain.
